Not yet 30 years of age, Jefferson Yap Shui Jing is an established alto saxophonist with a golden tone. His music education and passion for the saxophone began at the age of 13, when he joined the band in his secondary school. He was awarded his Licentiate Diploma of Trinity College London (LTCL) in Saxophone in 2007 with Distinction, and ABRSM Grade 7 Theory in 2008.
One of the most outstanding and prolific saxophonists in Singapore, Jefferson is a classical, pop and jazz performer and was a featured artist in the 2008 SG Band Fusion Online Interview. Jefferson has also participated in many local and international saxophone competitions.
His performing career started when he joined the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band in 2006 after graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. During his time in the SAF Central Band, Jefferson represented the nation in numerous International Military Band Tattoo Festivals in India, Malaysia, Canada and China.
A virtuosic saxophonist, Jefferson was the Jazz Soloist during the SAF Big Band Concert Get in Line in 2008, and also played a saxophone concerto, Duex Movements, as a guest with the Nanyang Polytechnic Symphony Orchestra in 2012. Since then, Jefferson has performed solo with many groups including the Lush Pop Orchestra and the Saxpress Saxophone Quartet at many places such as the Esplanade and the NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre.
Actively involved in music, Jefferson is currently the Principal Saxophonist of Windstars Ensemble and serves as an artist for the Lush Entertainment Group since 2009.
Besides maintaining an active performance career, Jefferson also teaches the saxophone. He is the lecturer for the saxophone faculty at the Singapore Raffles Music College, and he has taught the saxophone in the Methodist School of Music, Jurongville Secondary School Concert Band, Clementi Town Secondary School Concert Band, Commonwealth Secondary School Concert Band, Riverside Secondary School Concert Band, Presbyterian High School Concert Band, St. Margarets Secondary School Concert Band, and St Andrews Junior College Concert Band. Presently, Jefferson is the saxophone instructor of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band, Sembawang Secondary School Wind Band, and was also invited to teach secondary school students at the Music Talent Development Centre (Ministry of Education, Singapore). Jefferson offers private lessons for individuals who wish to take up the saxophone for leisure, as well as those preparing to take their Saxophone Practical Examinations.
Jefferson studied Saxophone Repair with Mr Pinai, Head of Wind Instrument Repair in Mahidol University Thailand in 2011. Since then, he has been providing repair and modification services, and his clients include Saxophone students at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and bands such as the Singapore Police Force Band, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Symphonic Band, Anglo-Chinese Junior College Concert Band, and Bands of the Singapore Armed Forces, to name a few.
Jefferson believes that the saxophone is a fun and extremely versatile instrument that can be brought into a myriad of musical genres. He continues to perform widely and promote the saxophone, and is the Music Director of the Singapore Community Saxophone Ensemble, a society he founded in 2013 aimed to instill the interest of learning the saxophone and a platform for passionate saxophone players to gather and make music. |
