As a freelance musician with over 20 years playing experience and 10 years teaching experience, my musical journey began at a young age. After starting with piano and recorder lessons at age 7, I moved on to clarinet, saxophone and in latter teens flute, playing in orchestras, symphonic bands, jazz combos, saxophone quartets, big bands and show bands and teaching woodwind privately and at schools around the Waikato region (New Zealand).
A move to Wellington in 2003 led to studying jazz saxophone at Massey University with tenor saxophone great Johnny Lippiet, and continuing to perform in show bands, jazz combos, avant garde groups, rock/pop/funk bands and big bands including the Darcy Perry blues band and Roger Fox big band, as well as teaching woodwind privately and through community education classes. From my mid 20s I developed a keen interest in singing, taking classical singing lessons and performing in concerts, shows, vocal ensembles and with choirs.
I continue to work on my instrumental skills by having lessons from Wellington's top woodwind teachers/players and devoting regular practice time to developing my musical abilities. I also attend many gigs, concerts, music festivals, Internet woodwind forums/sites, competitions, recitals, masterclasses and jam sessions. This ensures I have the knowledge and opportunities to grow musically and help others do the same. |
